About the Dorcas Centre

The Dorcas Club started in 1984. The central aim is to promote ‘community well-being’ through projects at the centre.  The Dorcas Club has managed projects at the Dorcas Centre including, ‘Children with Special Educational Needs’ and ‘Job Club’.  The well-used centre with a dedicated team of people is also involved in other projects designed to enable and broaden their work in the community.

The Dorcas Club is located in the vibrant multi-cultural, multi-faith and non-faith North-West Birmingham community of Handsworth.  The centre has been going for over 35 years and is at the heart of this vibrant community with a multi-cultural shopping area with stores that cater for African & Caribbean, Asian and Eastern European communities.

We are served by multiple bus routes i.e. the 101 Bus from the City stops right outside the centre and the 74 and 75 run along the Soho Road which is up the Road and the West Midlands Metro tram service just around the corner.  The No 16, 54, 61 Bus routes are all within a 10-minute walk.  We are within 2.5 miles of the Birmingham City Centre and within 4-mile of our neighbouring West Bromwich.

We have 3 large NHS Health centres and City Hospital all within 2-miles of the centre.  We are also served by 4 train stations within a 3-mile radius of the Centre.  We have a large community Library and South and City College within a 2-min walk, we have links with Jobcentre plus.  We have two Grammar schools, three comprehensive and eight or more primary schools all within close proximity.  We also have multiple places of worship, Soho House museum and over half-a-dozen Parks and green spaces.

Welcome to Digital Dorcas

Digital Dorcas: ICT Project in Handsworth

The Mission of Digital Dorcas is to facilitate access to online resources and training.  In these times of economic austerity funding is being reduced in further education and libraries at exactly the time when these services are required more than ever.  Digital Dorcas has been set-up to allow easily accessible digital tools and resources to be used by members of the community within a friendly relaxed community setting.
